Surgical Correction of Deformities of Upper Extremities in Athetoid Type of Cerebral Palsy


Abstract
A majority of patients with deformities of the upper extremity caused by cerebral palsy are adequately treated by conservative measures of cast, bracing, muscle training, muscle reeducation, rehabilitation and other modes of physical therapy.
The results of surgery in cerebral palsy are generally poor except a few type of spastic and rarely athetoid. It is the most important the goals of surgical treatment of the upper extremity in cerebral plasy in that the surgery provides the patient with the useful function of hand which was not possible preoperatively, but which helps in the daily activities.
We presented two cases of athetoid type of cerebral palsy involved the upper extremity who are treated by surgical measure of transference of flexor carp! ulnaris to extensor carpi radialis longus, biceps tenotomy and adductus tenotmy of the thumb with Z-plasty of thenar web space.
The physical therapy before and after surgery is the most important measure for the goal of successful results.
